The Hitch Hikers
There are dramatic films like Double Indemnity and then there are drawn out, anti climactic movies such as The Hitch Hikers. A way to further this point is with an analogy. Double Indemnity is to The Hitch Hikers as Grey's Anatomy is to General Hospital. When Walter and Phyllis are plotting to kill her husband and they go to the car after dumping the body on the rail road tracks and go back to the car that wont turn over. There is more drama and anxiety in that few seconds than in the whole hour and ten minutes of The Hitch Hikers.
This the sad fact that Emmett held onto the gun the whole movie (except from the last few min when he dropped it into the water) took away from the overall drama of their being a gun in the film. When Phyllis goes to shoot Walter we aren't expecting it because she was not being physically violent the whole time, just simply plotting to kill. She wasn't even the one to kill her husband. The constant presence of the gun somehow made this much less dramatic for me.
A couple of parallels that were noticeable were that the technology for shooting scenes in cars has not changed dramatically. There was a whole lot of dialog and not too much music. They were still using black and white film. Unlike Double Indemnity almost all of the scenes were different places besides the car. While in Double Indemnity they stuck too Phyllis's house and Walters office complex. Which is something I did enjoy.

I agree with you, the whole time i was watching the movie i was waiting for something to actually happen with the gun. Either Emmet shooting Roy, Gill, or some unlucky passerby.
